Biography

Dr. George Muntean joined PNNL in January 2002 after 16 years with Cummins Engine Company as a combustion research specialist/manager. While at PNNL he has held a variety of research and management positions, including the acting Chief Science & Technology Officer, Technical Group Manager, Market Sector lead, program manager, and Initiative lead.

Additional recent assignments have included the position of Regional Director for the Clean Energy Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute (CESMII) and Vice President of Engineering for a start-up company in Bend, OR. Prior to these roles, he spent one year on assignment with the DOE Under Secretary of Energy and Science supporting the development of the 2016 Quadrennial Technology Review. In this role, he received both the Secretary’s Appreciation Award as well as the Secretary’s Achievement Award. He has also held joint appointments with Oregon State University and Washington State University.

Dr. Muntean is best known for his work in combustion research and emissions control. He has numerous publications, a book chapter, patents, and presentations in this field. In his time with Cummins, Dr. Muntean led a combustion/performance/emissions development team responsible for the introduction of a proprietary Tier 2 light-duty diesel engine. This engine is designed for the light truck and SUV markets. In a previous assignment, he headed a research department that was responsible for the assessment, characterization, and development of diesel engine exhaust aftertreatment technologies. Through both assignments, Dr. Muntean was a technical leader of the Cummins negotiating team during the CARB LEV II, EPA TIER 2, and EPA 2007 heavy-duty diesel rulemaking processes.

Dr. Muntean received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in Mechanical Engineering and his M.S. degree from the University of Washington, also in Mechanical Engineering.
