Biography

Dr. Muntean has been with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory since January, 2002. He currently leads the Energy Conversion Initiative and is the Director of Transportation Programs at the lab. As such, he is directing the laboratory efforts in the fields of hydrocarbon gasification, synthesis gas and CO2 separations, and product synthesis from HC resources. In addition, he coordinates all activities associated with internal combustion engine research and transportation technology. Prior to his employment at PNNL, he worked as a research engineer/manager at Cummins Engine Company in Columbus, Indiana. Dr. Muntean is best known for his work in combustion research and emissions control.

In his nearly 16 years with Cummins, Dr. Muntean held several positions relating to combustion, performance and exhaust emissions research. Most recently, he led a combustion/performance/emissions development team responsible for the introduction of a proprietary Tier 2 light-duty diesel engine. This engine is designed for the light truck and SUV markets. In this vehicle category, Cummins was the first company to demonstrate the ability to meet the interim Tier 2 emissions standards with a diesel engine. Cummins was also the first to perform proof of concept work demonstrating the potential to meet the full Tier 2 standards. Cummins has recently announced the commercialization of this product with DaimlerChrysler.
